Probiotics And IBS - Do Probiotics Really Help For Treatment Of Irritable Bowel Syndrome?

Irritable Bowel Syndrom has no known causes or cures, but has plenty of triggers and remedies. IBS is most likely triggered by certain foods within a diet or lifestyle habits that cause the bowel to become irritated and produce unpleaseant and uncomfortable symptoms.

The foods we eat, such as things with a high fat content or with loads of caffeine can cause the bowel to become irritated. However, not only does it become irritated but it can affect other systems in the body.

Probiotics and IBS are one combination that can work as a remedy for any IBS sufferer. Probiotics help to keep the digestive tract regulated naturally. Probiotics are sometimes called "good bacteria" that live inside the digestive tract within our bodies. There are many positive hopes for probiotics and IBS. Although it hasn't been scientifically proven that probiotics are the key to treating IBS, they are a great start.

As stated before, other systems of the body are affected when the bowel becomes irritated.  Serotonin is one of them.  Although serotonin is a hormone within the brain that effects ones happiness, most of the receptors for serotonin are found in the digestive tract. Serotonin may also be a key factor in understanding IBS. It is also widely thought that the brain and belly are connected in this way and when the digestive tract becomes irritated, the levels of serotonin in the brain become unequally altered.

Because of this it is also thought that anything that affects the brain can affect the digestive tract. A perfect example of this is the effect of stress on an IBS patient. It is widely known that some foods are triggers for digestive trouble. But once the food componant has been figured out, someone with IBS can still suffer symptoms from the causes of excess stress. The stress wears on the serotonin level which in turn affects the digestive tract.

In the end, there still must be much more research done to understand probiotics and IBS. Understanding how probiotics can help IBS sufferers in the long run could be beneficial for many patients. Also understanding serotonin's role in the whole process and how IBS is effected when serotonin is altered could help the well being of many IBS sufferers.
